Hitch Up the Covered Wagons

I'm heading back to North Carolina today after an excellent trip to New York City. It's a long trip in the car, but never fear - I have a book on tape. Well, CD, really, but who's counting. It's Lolita, by Nabokov, a selection that made sense at the time but now makes me wish I had an option B. Well I suppose I could always listen to the soundtrack from Oklahoma! four or five times on repeat, which is how I kept myself entertained on the drive up here, but frankly I think it might be criminal to continue inflicting my version of "I'm Just A Girl Who Cain't Say No" on an unsuspecting populace.

So here's the bad news. My little brother Bug has scarlet fever. Scarlet fever? I thought that'd died out back in the 1800s. He should be fine, but I'll be glad to get home to give him a hug anyway. Poor little guy had a fever of 103 degrees and probably felt like, as my sister would say, "inside-out-flaming-asshole."

So wish me safe travels, and for Bug a speedy recovery. Talk to you all soon!

I made the mistake of getting the LOTR trilogy for a solo trip from Boston to Austin. I couldn't figure out why I was having so much trouble staying awake, until I put something else in the CD player.

Have a safe trip!

Aiden (or was it Isaac?) had scarlet fever. All it really is is a fever and a rash, so don't worry--he will be fine. But seriously, couldn't they call it something a little better like the bubonic plague or "mysterious disease that sounds really ancient and deadly and people who you thought were your friends will shun you completely like you are bringing live vipers into their home to bite their babies but really he will be back to school in a few days." Either one of those sounds less threatening than scarlet fever.

Be safe in your travels! I would recommend Steve Martin's "Pure Drivel" on tape (or cd, whatever, Gah.) Steve himself reads it. It's hilarious!!

OMG! Did bug time travel like certain characters in Star Trek? How else could he have contracted such an archaic illness? Good thing he wasn't hanging out with FDR... huh?

To a very speed recovery!
Cookie

p.s. make sure you hide the flux capicitator on the time machine, it will do bug good. trust me.

Have a safe trip! Hope the little bro gets better. Love the "inside out flaming a-hole" line!! Hilar!

Btw, I hear everything's up to date in Kansas City, but I wouldn't know firsthand. ;)

Awww, poor Bug! I agree with Cookie, best to hide the time machine from him until he gets older.

Have a safe drive!

Hi - I arrived here via Prunella, loved the story about your flameproof mum - and now it appears you have a brother feeling like an inside-out-flaming-asshole, I hope he's flameproof too.

LMAO @ inside-out-flaming-asshole

Also? It makes me love you more that you sing show tunes. My girls and I sing My Fair Lady, Mary Poppins, Annie, and Sound of Music at bedtime.

Hope your brother recovers quickly. Fevers are not pretty. Even if they are scarlet.

ok, i'm home safely, Bug is doing better, but Superdad is getting sick. We are a house of ill, but thanks for the many well wishes.

frank, i'm with kate on the profile pic. what is that a pic of, anyway? is that a kid eating his toes?

kate, thanks for the recommendation - i'll check out that steve martin book soon.

cookie, i've hidden the flux capacitor. thanks for that excellent suggestion; i got to it right before my dad and mom were set to return to the 1400s to greet the Pilgrims when they arrived.

Bev, they've gone about as far as they can go. ;)

Lulu, welcome! Thanks for checking out the blog.

Renny, i miss you! una semana mas!

Jessica O, we were clearly separated at birth, as those are my four favorite musicals, hands down!
